Beach Yoga

Beach yoga has become increasingly fashionable in coastal towns across the United States. The same is true in our world’s most famous beach where a demand for Daytona Beach yoga is on the rise. Sunrise and sunset yoga classes are now being offered in the month of June through Heavenly Fitness in Daytona Beach Shores. I am teaching the sunset yoga classes on Monday nights. We meet at Heavenly Fitness at 7 pm and walk over to Dahlia Park together as a group. The lesson will start at 7:15 pm and last until 8:15 pm. In that hour I’ll help attendees strike numerous subtle hatha poses that will gently stretch the body. We’ll also work on some breathing exercises to slow down overwhelmed minds and enjoy the natural peaceful atmosphere of the beach.

Dahlia Park is just south of the Dunlawton bridge and north of the SunGlow Pier. There should be plenty of parking at Heavenly Fitness studio or at Cherise’s salon next door. I recommend parking here instead of at the park. The sun will be setting so sunscreen will not be necessary. Dahlia Ave Park Daytona Beach Shores It was pretty breezy when I went to the beach today around 6:30 pm for the photoshoot. If you have long hair you might want to pull it back in a ponytail. I am going to bring a long sleeved shirt to wear over my usual yoga attire since I am a native Floridian and get chilly easily.

If you have a pricey yoga mat you might not want to bring it to the beach. Wet sand sticks to the mats and we wash them off after class. Manduka mats, for example, hold water like a sponge and take a long time to dry. The best type of mat to use for yoga on the beach is a straw mat. They are light to carry and the sand doesn’t stick to them, making them easy to clean. You can find these mats for under $5 at various gift shops on the beachside. My typical Ormond Beach yoga classes in studios feature a playlist of music to create a sereneatmosphere. At Daytona Beach yoga though our ears will be filled with the harmony of ocean waves coming to shore. As you practice ujjai breathing, your own breath will echo this sound of the ocean. Let go of stress, worries, and troubles as you bring your attention to the glorious view that makes our city famous.  I am always happy to demonstrate poses to to give modifications to my students with injuries or physical limitations. Before class feel free to let me know if there are certain aspects you would like to focus on for the practice. This is an all levels class, great for beginners and more experienced yogis alike.

Cherise’s Heavenly Fitness is located at 3616 South Atlantic Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores. We encourage students to choose a pricing structure that works best for their individual needs. Drop-ins are welcome at $12 per class. A 10 class card is $99 and 20 class cards are $189. In the month of June we are offering unlimited classes for only $50!

Namaste,
